Michael Feinberg, DDS, treats a variety of dental emergencies that result from traumatic dental injuries, such as avulsed, dislodged and fractured teeth. Most chipped teeth can be repaired with a simple filling but if the pulp of the tooth is exposed it may be treated by placing a filling over the injured area. Damages in the back teeth often include fractured cusps, cracked teeth and the more serious split teeth. The tooth can usually be restored by Dr. Feinberg, trusted Sunset Park emergency dentist, if the crack does not extend into the root. If the crack does extend into the root and affects the pulp, root canal treatment is usually necessary in an attempt to save all or part of your tooth.
Time is of the essence with Sunset Park Dental Emergencies, especially if a tooth is completely knocked out of your mouth (avulsed). If this type of injury happens to you, pick up your tooth by the crown (chewing portion) and try not to touch the root. Without using soap or other cleaning products, gently rinse the tooth if it’s dirty. Put the tooth back into its socket, if possible, and get to Dr. Feinberg immediately. Be sure to keep the avulsed tooth moist, if you can’t put it back in its socket, as the less time the tooth spends drying out the better the chance of saving it. There are specific solutions to keep your tooth moist that are available at local drug stores or you can put the tooth in milk or a glass of water with a pinch of salt. You can also put it in your mouth between your gum and cheek and, again, bring it to our dentist immediately.
Certain dental emergencies involve injuries to the mouth that cause teeth to be pushed back into their sockets (dislodged). If the tooth is pushed partially out of the socket, Dr. Feinberg may re-position your tooth after stabilizing it. No further treatment will be necessary if the pulp remains healthy but root canal will be necessary if the pulp becomes infected or damaged. Dr. Feinberg may place a medication inside the tooth, such as calcium hydroxide, within a few weeks of the initial injury once root canal is started. The canal will eventually be sealed by placing a permanent root canal filling.
